Youth Assist – Future Focussed Sessions

Youth Assist Clients have four Facilitation appointments with the Youth Assist Co-ordinator. Below is a breakdown on what is completed during these four Facilitation appointments

Within the first Facilitation session, the Youth Client’s communication style is assessed through the Australian Identities Questionnaire. The Australian Identities Questionnaire helps identify an individual’s personality and characteristics by relating them to an Australian animal, a Wombat, Kangaroo, Dolphin or Eagle. These Australian animals have an overview of strengths and weaknesses, which is explored with the Client to provide an insight into who they are.

A Pre Assessment is also completed with the Youth Client to identify any current circumstance that may be impacting the Client as well as assessing the Client’s life challenges, any achievements they want to attempt to achieve in education/employment or with family/friends. This assessment also provides a brief overlook on what the Client would like to improve on and what strengths the Client can already identify.

Within the second Facilitation session, the Client’s values are identified using a Value card resource. Due to values being a fundamental belief that aids in the guidance of decisions, behaviours and interactions, it is important that Youth Clients are aware of these values to align their goals. Once the Client’s values are identified, the Youth Assist Co-ordinator clarifies and explores these values and why the Client has established these values.

Within the third session a Goal Setting exercise is completed while incorporating the Youth Assist Framework. The Youth Assist Framework entails topics around the Client’s temperance, identity, perspectives, responsibilities, family and community. The goals established within this session, are the goals that will be directly targeted when the Youth Client engages with a Trauma Counsellor. This session also incorporates the Client’s values from the previous session to aid in the establishment of goals

The last session with the Youth Assist Co-ordinator explores a Collaborative Assessment Plan (CAP). The Client’s CAP outlines topics that the Youth Assist Co-ordinator is worried about and is associated with the Client. Other topics around any complicating factors, protection/belonging, strengths, goal statements and any action steps that have been or will be taken by the Youth Assist Co-ordinator or any other stakeholders involved with the Client. The Client is able to review and amend the collaborative document. During this session, a handover is completed with the Trauma Counsellor that the Client will be allocated to.

Youth Assist Program with Suicide Intervention

When a Youth Client presents with Suicide Ideation or Self-Harming Behaviours during Triage, the Youth Assist Program tailors its approach to provide Safety and Stability for the Client. Safety and Stability for Youth experiencing Suicide Ideation aids in preventing harm, supporting recovery and fostering trust. This reduces immediate risk while the Youth Assist Co-ordinator can still conduct Facilitation appointments with the young person. Within this approach, Youth Clients will have alternating sessions between the Youth Assist Co-ordinator and the Youth Suicide Intervention Specialist.
