Youth Assist – Counselling Sessions

Building a Better Life starts with having an opportunity to reflect on where you are and what might be barriers and challenges to your achievement. Trauma is often an unseen barrier of self-determination.

Trauma Counselling with Youth Client’s is a flexible and responsive process that is adaptable to the Client’s emotional state and needs in each session. With goals already established, the focus shifts to supporting the young person in working towards these outcomes through a strength-based, trauma-informed approach.

Youth Clients receive six fortnightly sessions with the Trauma Counsellor, which typically involve a combination of Psychoeducation, emotional support, and practical strategies tailored to the Client’s experiences. Psychoeducation is provided as needed to help the Client better understand trauma and its impacts, empowering them to make sense of their responses and build self-awareness. Resources and handouts are offered to reinforce learning and support skill development outside of sessions.

Throughout the Counselling journey, the young person’s strengths and existing supports are consistently highlighted and reinforced. Barriers to progress are explored collaboratively, and strategies are developed to overcome them. Where appropriate, the Client’s support network is reviewed, and gaps are identified. This may involve advocating for the Client or coordinating with stakeholders to ensure a more holistic support system.

As the work progresses, external Referrals are discussed and actioned if additional support is needed. The Counselling process includes regular reflection on the Client’s growth, with space to acknowledge achievements and adjust strategies as required. The final stages of Counselling focus on consolidating progress, addressing any remaining challenges, and equipping the Client with tools and resources to maintain their wellbeing beyond the sessions.

This approach ensures that Trauma Counselling remains client-led, empowering, and grounded in the young person’s lived experience, while maintaining a clear focus on their therapeutic goals.
